Found in Paris fleamarket, this delightful Limoges match striker or pyrogène is a so collectible as well as attractive. This is one of the more unusual models, the first I have ever found.
Originally designed to sit in a café or bistro, or maybe even in this case a salon du thé, to advertise Maisin Ducuing which sold quality homewares - crystal, flatware and porcelain.
It's practical use was it held matches in the cup to be struck on the ridges.
Nowadays using this requires non-safety matches, but today matchstrikers are highly collectible antiques which can be repurposed as (among many uses) posy vases, candle holders and can be used as a talking point, to hold cocktail sticks at a buffet.
It is stamped Limoges on the base and stands 3.5" tall. There are small amount of wear to the pink design around the rim where the matches have rested.
