Found in France, this elegantly romantic English water pitcher dates from the time when the owners of the new smart Haussmann apartments bought English ironstone from the Grand Depots in Paris. This impressive pircher will bring a romantic elegance to your home and is wonderful filled with fresh or dried flowers and foliage.

The romantic pastoral scene on this large ironstone water pitcher is named Watteau after the famous French painter who popularised 'fêtes gallantes' or scenes of idyllic romantic pastoral settings where members of society frolic!

The detailed, hand-engraved scene depicts a courting couple on a garden swing framed by a lush, pastoral canopy of trees and an idyllic distant castle.

The underside bears the authentic stamped crown and ribbon hallmark of Ashworth & Bros, Stoke-on-Trent, England. It reliably dates the piece to the late Victorian era, 1862 - 1890 .

It has a wonderfully ornate handle and fluted top to match the design.

There is slight cracking to the top of the handle, this does not go right through. I would advise never to carry any picher of this size by the handle when it contains water.

The pitcher measures 12.5" tall
