Discovered in Paris, this enchanting antique French pitcher features a beautifully detailed transferware decoration of on one side, three songbirds nestled among blossoming branches, two on the other and a sweet bird in the middle under the lip.
Decorated in deep cobalt blue on a creamy ivory ground, the artwork captures the romantic naturalist style that made French faïence so beloved at the turn of the twentieth century. Delicate and detailed engraving of the original design creates remarkable texture in the birds’ feathers and flowering branches, giving the piece an almost illustrated quality.
What makes this pitcher particularly special is the unusual bird motif. While floral transferware is frequently encountered, bird-themed examples of this quality are increasingly sought after by collectors and decorators alike.
The form of the water ewer is beautifully sculptural with an elegant handle and broad lip.
Whether displayed on an open shelf, styled with garden flowers, or added to a collection of French faïence, it brings an unmistakable sense of charm and poetry.
Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its history. There is a small mature chip under the lip and a small area of discolouration. It displays beautifully and remains structurally stable.
The pitcher measures 6" tall and 7.5" in diameter.
