As well as beauty, this compote has an enigma. It came from a large Parisian house and indeed was bought in Paris, but it is English ironstone.

In the Haussmann era there was a fashion for English pottery, and the Grand Depots had designs made in England to their specifications. This history dates the compote to the late 1800s.

The compote is unusual also in that is has a dark pink floral pattern and delightful crackling and a 'buttered' patination all over. The edges of the plate and the base are fluted, adding to the charm.

It stands 3" tall and just under 9" in diameter. There is one small crack on the base, pictured in close up.
